Family Tree

All known Alabasters are believed to descend from a single family in Hadleigh, Suffolk. The earliest documented ancestor is Thomas Alabaster of Hadleigh, who was alive circa 1522. From this one man, six main branches spread across Britain and the world over the following centuries.

The branches

The Society identifies the following main branches of descent:

  • Branch I
  • Branch II — subdivided into IIA, IIB, and IIC
  • Branch III — subdivided into IIIA and IIIB
  • Branch IV
  • WofW — West of Westmore (Alabasters who descend through female lines or connections not yet placed in the main branches)

Each Chronicle Issue in our Chronicles archive is tagged by branch, making it easier to find articles relevant to your line of descent.

GEDCOM download

The Society’s family tree data is available as a GEDCOM file for use with genealogy software. Contact the Honorary Secretary to request the current file.

Interactive tree

An interactive, browsable family tree is planned for a future phase of the website. In the meantime, the GEDCOM file and the Chronicle archive are the best resources for detailed research.
